The Diabetes UK Careline, first opened in 1996 and staffed by trained counsellors, answers a huge variety of questions every day. Enquiries range from factual questions about living with diabetes – such as diet, medication, travelling abroad or driving – through to queries from people who are finding it hard to cope and just need ‘a listening ear’.
Now, if during the course of a call, Careline staff believe the caller would benefit from a clinical assessment or require health information unrelated to diabetes, they can, with the consent of the caller, now transfer the call straight through to NHS Direct. This facility provides callers with a more seamless service, and ensures they benefit from the expertise which both Diabetes UK and NHS Direct can offer.
