T Trainer Group launches new Lead/Master Trainer Guide
By Ian Darling, Chairman, T Trainer Group
2011 has announced itself with cold winds, frost, ice and snow and a myriad of austerity measures. However, one bit of good news is the introduction of a new Lead/Master Trainer Guide. This is the manual followed by the trainers on all courses training new leaders to deliver the portfolio of Stanford Self-Management Courses available in the UK (Chronic Disease, Arthritis and the Positive Programme for HIV/AIDS).
For many years trainers and participants have been looking to introduce more skills training into the leaders trainings. Stanford have a number of requirements to be met to fulfil license obligations and one of these is that new leaders must have the whole course presented to them on their training. Because of this, room to manoeuvre is limited. Last February a small working party representing the T Trainer Group of the UK met for a week in London with Prof Kate Lorig of Stanford University Patient Education Programme to write the new guide. One of Stanford’s aims was to have consistency across the UK and we hope that the introduction of this new guide will ensure that this principal is met.
There are a number of additions and improvements which the T Trainer Group feel will add to the skills being taught on leader trainings. The main differences are the greatly expanded review sessions which come at the end of each week of the course delivery. In the old guide these were usually about 15 minutes long. These important learning sessions are now all roughly an hour each. Instead of focusing on ‘ask and tell’ we now focus on ‘ask and discuss’ to allow trainee leaders to work out problems for themselves with the help of their group and the Master Trainers. Practical sessions expanded or changed include a new ‘Working with groups’ session and a different approach to practicing Action Planning and Feedback.
The new guide has been trialled in both Wales and England and feedback has been extremely positive. Six training sessions have been organised in the first 3 months of this year, each being led by two T Trainers. The new manual should be used for leader trainings as soon as Master Trainers are trained and the old manual will cease to be operational from 31st March 2011.

On 17 December the Government published its response to the consultation on implementing the NHS White Paper. The paper sets out the framework for creating an NHS that focuses on three things: putting patients at the heart of the NHS; improving outcomes; and empowering organisations and professionals, freeing them up from bureaucracy and central control. The formal response to the White Paper consultation takes into account all suggestions from the consultation period – 6,000 comments were received – and sets out how and when these reforms will take shape.
