Self-Management Today - November 2010

Issue 6 November 2010

Welcome

Welcome to the sixth issue of Self-Management Today. We have some very exciting news in this issue as we are very pleased to announce the launch of www.selfmanagement.co.uk This new website will be the home of The National Register of Self-Management and an online resource centre for everyone in the self-management community. See the article below for more information.

In addition, hopefully you are aware that Self Care Week is happening now. It started on Monday 15th and will end this Sunday 21st November. There are lots of events happening to celebrate this week. If you are running/attending anything yourself we would love to hear how it went and put something in next issue.

Just a quick reminder for all Lead Trainers. Please make sure you book onto one of the Lead Trainer supervisions being held between January and March 2011. They will include essential training on the NEW Lead Trainer Guide that is being launched in January 2011. All of the supervisions are being run by the UK's T Trainers. For more information and dates please see www.selfmanagement.co.uk/self-management-events or email admin@selfmanagement.co.uk

As many of you are aware Caring with Confidence came to an end in September. EPP CIC and the NRSM are currently reviewing the future plans for this project. Many of you will have been affected by this but please bear with us during this transitional period. If you have any queries please email admin@selfmanagement.co.uk and we will forward your enquiry to the relevant people. Thank you for your patience.

We are considering holding a national event or conference for self-management tutors and professionals next year. If you haven't already we would be grateful if you could take a minute or so to complete our very quick survey that will give us feedback on what kind of event you would like. Please click  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MTG3QBW or copy and paste it into your browser bar if the link does not work.

selfmanagement.co.uk

www.selfmanagement.co.uk, the brand new resource for the Self Care Community, is being launched to coincide with Self Care week 15th - 22nd November 2010.

This exciting resource for all volunteers and professionals engaged in the Self-Management community will, for the first time, bring together resources and information in one place and will offer a unique opportunity to network online through forums, find out about the latest training resources and share best practice.

At the heart of selfmanagement.co.uk is The National Register of Self-Management, a national database of tutors, assessors, trainers and lead trainers accredited to deliver Expert Patients Programmes.

On the site you can add your details to the register, request information from the register (for example if you are looking for tutors to run courses), download updates to manuals and training materials, apply for Learning Credits through the OCN credit 4 learning, access back copies for our exciting newsletter Self-Management Today , read the latest news from the press and online related to long-term conditions, self-management and anything health related, contribute to debates and discuss anything self-management related on our discussion forums.

There are currently 1400 people on the National Register of Self-Management from over 50 organisations and we are growing by the day, don’t miss out on your opportunity to engage with others in the community across England, in times of uncertainty and budget cuts developing a strong and effective voice for the sector is critical and we hope that selfmanagement.co.uk will provide a platform for this.

Here at selfmanagement.co.uk we are always looking for new resources, information and events to publicise and share on the website. If you have something that you feel would be of interest to others, please let us know by calling 0333 344 1800 or email admin@selfmanagement.co.uk

Self Care Week - England

Self Care WeekFollowing on from the success of last year’s awareness week for self care, the Department of Health is running Self Care Week 2010 again, as we go to print, from 15th to 21st November . The Week was launched by Paul Burstow the Minister of State for Care Services at the Expert Self Care Symposium on 10th November. The focus for the Week is to encourage people to take more responsibility for their own health by learning about the support and information that already exists to help them to self care. It is also an opportunity for health and social care organisations - including the voluntary and private sector to promote/launch self care initiatives to their local community/member/customers. For example, Culm Valley Integrated Centre for Health near Exeter held a 'Health Question Time' at the local surgery where a panel of doctors and experts answered questions on managing tiredness and fatigue, and Birmingham PCTs will be using their Be-Active and Health Exchange buses to promote self care at the local market in conjunction with local voluntary and community groups.

Keep an eye out in the next edition of Self-Management Today for a review of the week!

Scotland's first ever Self Management Week 4th - 8th October 2010

By Kevin Geddes, Director of Self-Management, Long Term Conditions Alliance Scotland

The Long Term Conditions Alliance Scotland (LTCAS) were pleased to launch the My Condition, My Terms, My Life campaign ahead of our first ever Self Management Week. The campaign features real people living with long-term conditions, telling their stories to encourage other people to get started with self-management. www.myconditionmylife.org
During Self Management Week itself we were delighted that nearly 200 people attended our Self Management Showcase event on Tuesday 5th October. Nicola Sturgeon MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing, met with many of the funded projects before addressing the audience and launching the Interim Evaluation report for the Self Management Fund. The day proved to be a great opportunity for exhibitors to showcase their projects, workshop hosts to tell more about the impact their projects have made for people living with long-term conditions and a number of people telling their own personal stories of self-management.

In addition, just over 80 people from LTCAS member organisations, Scottish Government, NHS, local authorities and other stakeholders joined MSPs from all parties to show their support at our Parliamentary Reception on Wednesday 6th October. Mary Mulligan MSP sponsored and chaired this event which looked at ‘The Foundations, Developments and Future of Self Management in Scotland’.

The week was rounded off with many partner organisations hosting their own events to highlight self-management across Scotland.

GET INVOLVED!

Here at selfmanagement.co.uk we are committed to developing resources and services which are relevant and useful to our members and we are only able to achieve this through open dialogue with our members.

Last year we conducted market research with tutors which led to the development of the first wave of services through selfmanagement.co.uk and we have now started the process of talking to organisations who are engaged with delivering self-management courses.
As part of this we recently met with Annette Jaep - EPP Project Support Manager at Worcestershire PCT, Sharon Smith - Self Care Management/PALS Lead at NHS Telford and Wrekin and Elaine Smith - Administrator/Trainer from NHS Walsall Community Health and had an informative and useful meeting about potential developments for the National Register and selfmanagement.co.uk. It was useful for us to gain an insight into the operational issues for managers and tutors in delivery organisations and to see how we might be able to support this through the development of the website.
There is a strong commitment from all who attended the meeting to develop a central resource for the self care community where best practice can be shared, materials can be accessed with ease and volunteers and professionals can discuss issues relevant to their delivery and management of courses.
It was acknowledged that communication has not always been as excellent as it could have been but we all felt positive about the links that we had made and were keen to ensure that they continued. We are looking for others to tell us what they would like to see developed- please let us know by calling 0333 344 1800 or emailing admin@selfmanagement.co.uk if you would like to get involved.
This resource is for you so get involved!

Choice Consultation and Information Strategy

The Department of Health has launched two consultation proposals “Liberating the NHS: Greater choice and control. A consultation on proposals” and "An Information Revolution: a consultation on proposals" in line with the White Paper "Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS", which sets out the Government’s vision of an NHS that puts patients and the public first.

"Liberating the NHS: Greater choice and control. A consultation on proposals” explains the proposals in more details and seeks the views of patients, the wider public, healthcare professionals and the NHS on:

  • Proposals for offering more choice for patients and service users
  • How shared decision making can become the norm
  • How it can happen: information, 'any willing provider' and other tools
  • Making safe and sustainable choices

The consultation closes on 14 January 2011. For more information about the proposals please visit http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Consultations/Liveconsultations/DH_119651

"An Information Revolution: a consultation on proposals" is about transforming the way information is accessed, collected, analysed and used so that people are at the heart of health and adult social care services. Key proposals for the information revolution include:

  • People having greater access to and control of their health and social care records
  • More information on treatments, conditions and lifestyle choices
  • Helping people look after their own and their family’s health and care
  • Greater emphasis on information generated by patients and service users (for example, patient-reported outcomes measure (PROMs), experience data, and feedback)
  • A wider range of providers to analyse and present information to the public
  • Improved use of digital technologies

The consultation will also close on 14 January 2011. For more information about the proposals please visit http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Consultations/Liveconsultations/DH_120080

There will be an opportunity to take part in a webchat with the Secretary of State for Health about the proposals in both consultations - for more information please visit: http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Aboutus/Features/DH_120606
