Self-Management Today - October 2010

October 2010 - Special Edition

Self Care Week - 15th-21st November

Following on from the success of last year’s awareness week for self-care, the Department of Health is pleased to announce that Self Care Week 2010 will be running from 15th to 21st November. The focus this year is to encourage people to take more responsibility for their own health by learning about the support and information that already exists to help them to self care - learning to live well.

It is an opportunity for health and social care organisations, including the voluntary and private sector, to promote or launch self care initiatives to their local community, members or customers and raise awareness of the support they can offer people with long-term conditions. An information pack to support local activities, including leaflets, posters, case studies, key messages etc, will be available shortly. If you would like further information please email the NRSM team at  admin@selfmanagement.co.uk

A range of public-facing leaflets to support local initiatives are already available from the Department of Health Orderline, with more to follow:

  • Help and advice for living well with a long term condition - ref. 296717
  • Care planning leaflet - which sets out what a care plan is, what is should contain - ref. 299425
  • Self care for minor ailments (written by the Men's Health Forum specifically with men in mind) - ref. MHFSCW09

If you would like copies of the leaflets, please contact 0300 123 10002 and quote the references above.

In the meantime, if you have any queries, or would like to receive your own copy of the communications materials, please email richard.kenyon@dh.gsi.gov.uk

Lead Trainer Supervisions 2011

As mentioned in September's Self-Management Today the T Trainers have now completed updating the new Lead Trainer Guide. The new guide will be made available in January 2011 to licensed organisations and their Lead Trainers. As part of the rollout all Lead Trainers are required to attend one of the Lead Trainer supervisions being held between January and March 2011 led by the T Trainers. The supervision will satisfy your annual Lead Trainer supervision needs and also include training on the new manual. Please note, due to popular demand there are now TWO dates available in January for Birmingham. I shall be in touch with everyone who has enquired about this session so far to confirm which date they would prefer to attend.

The supervisions will take place as follows:

  • Thursday 20th January - London
  • *NEW DATE*  Friday 21st January - Birmingham
  • Monday 24th January - Birmingham
  • Monday 31st January - Bath
  • Thursday 3rd February - Warrington
  • Thursday 24th February - York
  • Monday 14th March - Bury St Edmunds
  • Tuesday 22nd March - London

A new PDF version of the manual will be sent to you approximately two weeks before the supervision. This should give you some time to familiarise yourselves with the new manual to help you get the very most out of the day.

If you have any questions or would like to register your interest in advance or, if you are not currently on the National Register of Self-Management but would like to attend the sessions then please email admin@selfmanagement.co.uk

We expect as the guide gets used there will be some further small changes. Lead trainers will be updated through the National Register where any changes will be available to download.

**These supervision and training sessions are ONLY available through the National Register of Self-Management.**
