Issue 5 September 2010
Welcome to our fifth edition of Self-Management Today. We'd like to welcome everyone that has recently joined the National Register of Self-Management (NRSM) especially those from Caring with Confidence and Co-creating Health. Unfortunately, these two projects have recently come to an end but we hope that these projects will continue in different formats as things become clearer following the changes by the new coalition government.
Again we have another packed issue for you. Craig White, the Clinical Lead at the Scottish Government discusses self-management across the border in Scotland. The MS Society introduce their new website to help people with long-term health conditions find and keep in work. There is important news for Lead Trainers as information is included about the new Lead Trainer manual and the essential training sessions that you must attend! We also sadly say a fond goodbye to Frank Roy Jones a pioneer of self-management in England.
On another note, to make up for the lack of national events in 2010, we are looking at the possibility of hold a national conference for self-management delivers in 2011. To help us decide whether or not to go ahead we need some feedback from you. Please click on the following link to complete a very short survey. Thank you in advance for your help!
We hope you enjoy...
The recently published White Paper Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS, sets out the Government's long-term vision for the future of the NHS and focuses on the Secretary of State’s priorities. These include a patient-led NHS; delivering better health outcomes; and a more autonomous and accountable system. The vision is clear that patients and the public will be put at the heart of the NHS through greater control. Supporting patients to take more responsibility and empowering professionals to support people to feel more confident about their self care choices is central to improving outcomes and completely supports the principle of shared decision making: no decision about "me without me" as part of the new Government's vision

The DH will update in more detail in the next month's issue as the direction Ministers wish to take for long-term conditions becomes clearer.
Over the last few months the T Trainers have been working on a new Lead Trainer guide. The process started with a 3 day workshop led by Kate Lorig. The objective is to have a single UK manual to help ensure consistency of training and standards across all organisations running Stanford courses and came about through requests from Lead Trainers and others who often found they were using different versions of the Lead Trainers manual.
The development process has been led and funded by EPP CIC. Arthritis Care and EPP Wales have also contributed along with individual T Trainers giving their time and support. The new guide has had a few trial runs and is now having its final proof read and edit.
The new guide will be made available in January 2011 to licensed organisations and their Lead Trainers. As part of the rollout all Lead Trainers are required to attend a Lead Trainer supervision being held between January and March 2011 led by the T Trainers. The supervision will satisfy your annual Lead Trainer supervision needs and also include training on the new manual.
The supervisions will take place as follows:
A new version of the manual will be sent to you approximately two weeks before the supervision. This should give you some time to familiarise yourselves with the new manual to help you get the most out of the day.
We will be contacting all Lead Trainers registered on The National Register of Self-Management about the training sessions in due course and will provide details of costs, booking arrangements etc. However, if you have any questions or would like to register your interest in advance or, if you are not currently on the register but would like to attend the sessions then please email admin@selfmanagement.co.uk
We expect as the guide gets used there will be some further small changes. Lead trainers will be updated through the National Register where any changes will be available to download.
**These supervision and training sessions are ONLY available through the National Register of Self-Management.**
Many of you will have heard about the changes happening in the NHS. Primary care trusts are going and GPs will be deciding what services are available in your local area. The Department of Health is running a consultation on these changes - some of these have the potential to determine the ongoing future of self-management programmes. The NRSM is keen to ensure that those living with long-term health conditions have a voice in these consultations.
Below is a link to a questionnaire - please help us ensure self-management courses are here to stay by completing the questionnaire. Your responses to the questions will form the basis of the response we make to the Government. The response we send in to Government will be published on the NRSM website. One thing we can all do is tell our own GP what benefit we have gained through EPP, and please remember to encourage course participants to write to their GP as well.
Dear NHS user.
As you may be aware the Government is proposing significant changes to the way the NHS is run and how patients are given information and treatment.
These changes are currently out for consultation. We are keen to comment on these changes and would value your help in this. We have created a questionnaire that covers the main points relating to long-term conditions. Please take some time to complete this survey. All responses are anonymous. A big welcome to Caring with Confidence (CwC) facilitators. CwC was a Department of Health funded program for carers. Funding for this programme comes to an end in September. However the program has been life changing for many carers. The National Register of Self-Management will act as a focal point going forward for CwC.
Update on support to facilitators and providers.
Three dates have now been provided to train Facilitator Coaches (Facilitator Coaches provide the support to the new facilitators but do not train them ). In addition, it is hoped that dates will be provided for a Train the Trainer training. This will ensure, going forward, that providers will have the full capacity to train their own facilitators.
Please note that only experienced CwC facilitators would be eligible at this stage to be trained or people with significant training/coaching skills.
From September the National Register of Self-Management (NRSM) via it's website: www.selfmanagement.co.uk will act as a central point of contact for sharing resources and accessing discussion groups. It will hold a listing of CwC facilitators, coaches, trainers etc and hence act as a resource for any organisation needing to access training, support, supervision etc. The web site is currently being updated from the current version to support this.
Coaches and trainers fees may vary between individuals and organisations.
Facilitators and organisations will be able to use the NRSM site as a way of sharing best practice and hopefully collaborating in the updating of training etc in light of evaluation and user feedback.
New facilitators may be added to the NRSM as they are trained and a Passport to Practice (P2P) will be issued upon evidence of training. In addition, providers will be able to access the NRSM to manage their facilitators and renew P2P.
These developments will take some time to put in place but there will be regular newsletters to keep you all informed.
All CwC materials will be freely available from the NHS Choices (care section) website. A best practice guide is being produced to go with this.
Training facilitators
Providers who wish to continue to have facilitators trained will be able to access training via the NRSM. Trainers and coach fees for training may vary. There is in place a network of coaches and trainers across the country that will be accessible via the NRSM team. Facilitator training will be tailored to meet the specific needs of an organisation including Train the Trainer.
From the 28th September all services will be on contracted fee basis.
To maintain the Passport to Practice it is expected best practice that facilitators attend some form of supervision and skills update every 12- 18 months and ideally have some form of observation of practice.
Completely new providers will be able to access capacity building and start up support via the NRSM.
Although under the post September arrangements there are no restrictions on who can carry out training, any need for them to have any previous experience etc. It is hoped that these arrangements will provide a way forward that is affordable and ensures that the CWC sessions can continue to be provided.
Any questions then please contact Linda Cairns on 07500 104610 or Jim Phillips on 07793 154824 or, The National Register of Self-Management team on 033 344 1800, 0845 8622 410 or admin@selfmanagement.co.uk

By Professor Craig White - Clinical Lead, Scottish Government. Mrs Christine Hoy - Programme Manager, Scottish Government. Mr Kevin Geddes - Director, Self-Management Long-Term Conditions Alliance Scotland
Scotland’s first ever Self-Management Week from 4th – 8th October 2010 will celebrate the many initiatives, programmes and projects across Scotland supporting people living with long-term conditions, and their unpaid carers, to manage their conditions better and ultimately enjoy a better quality of life.
A series of events and awareness raising resources will bring together partners across Scottish Government, health and social care, voluntary and community organisations as well as individuals. The week aims to build upon ‘Gaun Yersel – the Self Management Strategy for Scotland’, and the recent NHS Scotland Quality Strategy to focus on person centred approaches to healthcare – and highlight the many benefits of the self-management approach.
The Self-Management Strategy, developed and written by people living with long-term conditions, was launched in 2008. Over the past two years the Long-Term Conditions Alliance Scotland (LTCAS) have been administering the £4million Scottish Government Self-Management Fund. Eighty-one diverse voluntary and community organisations, supporting a variety of conditions and equalities groups, have shared the allocation of funds to develop and deliver a variety of self-management approaches, programmes, toolkits and resources across Scotland.
All the NHS Boards across Scotland have been working to transform the way in which they deliver services for people living with long-term conditions. The Long -erm Conditions Collaborative has supported work to increase the provision of self-management support within NHS Scotland. NHS Ayrshire and Arran has also been working with the Health Foundation to promote mutuality and new models of healthcare to lead a change in the traditional patient/clinician relationship, encouraging partnership and co-creation.
People living with long-term conditions have taken a lead role in improving access to support and sharing local resources through the Access to Local Information to Support Self-Management (ALISS) project, backed by the Scottish Government. The project has highlighted the links between good health literacy and the ability to effectively self-manage.
Many of these initiatives, and more, will be showcased during Self-Management Week. Future developments will be also be proposed and discussed at events involving all the partners in promoting self-management support at the Scottish Parliament. For more information please visit the LTCAS website www.ltcas.org.uk
